Friendship

by The Lion Nest

/

about

Friendship is the first track James Groft and I wrote for our new project, The Lion Nest. Inspired by and adapted from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay of the same title, we created it in a cozy kitchen in Joshua Tree, California one sunny October afternoon, and recorded it in December 2014 at the studio of Andy Joslin in Phoenix, Arizona. David Earl contributed additional instrumentation on the bridge.

Amidst the frenzied whir of holiday celebrations, libations, and gushing showers of presents, recording this song helped us stay tuned to the essence of what we all share with one another on this little earth walk. With love from a little den in the Mojave desert to your own little nest, wherever you may be.

lyrics

give me not what you've got
but what you are
all that radiates from you

let's meet as if we've never met
part as if we've never left
then i'm always with you

child of my days gone by
prophet of times to come
i'm a mirror for you

shine a light on me
oh shine on me
shine a light so i can see

Spectral keyboard washes and sinuous dance beats set up a feeling of warm alienation while Artemis’s voice heats things further. Over the thump and shimmer, she croons with detached fervor, the music dissolving in a storm of pixie-dust disco until a rude riot of effects snaps the tether and she vanishes. ... more
