about

Hey there, fellow traveler! I'm Artemis, a solo artist from Oakland, California, writing & singing dreamy, poetic, space-science-nature-infused, heart-on-my-sleeve ditties til the cows come home. All my music is produced DIY and released through the artist collective and label I co-founded, RTFM Records.

Triptych I (Eight for a Wish) is the first in a trilogy of EPs called Triptych.

The three Triptych EPs are being released one at a time, and are comprised mainly of material I wrote during Songaday 2012 - a crazy thing a lil bunch of us do each year, writing, recording and posting online a song every single day for the month of February. It's nuts. Terrifying, exhausting, exhilerating, raw and brilliant. I was hooked from day one.

Songaday changed the course of my musical life. Though I started my musical journey writing songs solo on guitar (take a listen to some of the stuff on the Treasure album), for the past several years I've been mainly co-writing with a handful of producers, often taking someone else's musical ideas and arranging songs around them, then bringing them to life with lots of lush, lovely production, and performing them live with a full band.

The songs on Triptych are my foray back into writing songs 100% solo, from the ground up. These songs (with a few well-deserving exceptions that begged for big ol' production sparkles, bells, booms & whistles) are more stripped down and intimate. And I'm intimate with these songs. I know them skin to marrow, I love them inside out, and I can perform them with a band or without. So this stuff is what you'll hear me performing as a solo artist, my main gig these days. If you've caught one of the shows on my 2013 Room For Living tour with Daniel Berkman, you may have heard some of the songs from Triptych already. If not, here's your chance. Hope you enjoy.

The cover art for Triptych I (Eight for a Wish) is a painting created by San Francisco artist Eden Gallanter, inspired by the song Supernova, which she heard the first time I performed it live, at DNA Lounge in December 2012. Explore more of Eden's deeply intuitive art and science through her new Cheimonette Tarot deck at www.kickstarter.com/projects/27209155/the-cheimonette-tarot - The deck includes a compilation CD of music inspired by the cards and Eden's readings - songs from Meredith Yayanos, Jill Tracy, Unwoman, Mark Growden, Star St. Germain, Myrrh Larsen and myself.

If you like this music, feel free to support it by paying for a download if you can afford to, or just by passing along the album link to your friends. Independent music is a grassroots effort, and your ears and love and participation is the lovely rain that keeps this prarie bloomin'. Thanks so much for looking and listening.

about

Artemis San Francisco

Spectral keyboard washes and sinuous dance beats set up a feeling of warm alienation while Artemis’s voice heats things further. Over the thump and shimmer, she croons with detached fervor, the music dissolving in a storm of pixie-dust disco until a rude riot of effects snaps the tether and she vanishes. ... more

Track Name: Supernova
falling from nine thousand feet
buffered by explosions from below
til falling feels like floating

hold on til i go

cracking at the seams
runaway reaction
til lighting explode the shell

hold on til i go
supernova

deep in space
it's so cold
only light touches light
i burn hotter and brighter
particles collide
dream helium to gold
reach wider and wider
til gravity take hold
whisper
keep it together
keep it together
i keep it together
til i go
supernova
Track Name: Harbinger
human emotion
river flowing
spinning galaxy
keep me guessing

heart ripe and open
like a warm plum
harbinger of spring
here we come

behind every shadow
ray of light
behind every stormcloud
thunder of delight

mind wide and open
like a warm sea
like a tree's arms
like your eyes
look into me

impulse to touch
keep fastened in
humble servant
to night's unfolding
dewdrop on fingertip
lying patiently
waiting for morning

white bird of peace
arrow of desire
blue sky for hungry eye

heart ripe and open
like a warm plum
harbinger of spring
here we come

here we come
Track Name: Heart Pancake
saving up all my skipped heartbeats
for a rainy day
just so i can remember
every thrill that came my way
pour my heart out
on a pancake
eat it up tart and sweet
wanna run into the arms
of every stranger that i meet

is this the party at the end of the universe
or a dawning age
i don't mind i flow with it

time is changing
geo rearranging
peep inside a moment find another world
tongue on my finger
fuzzy footsteps prancing
with gentle nuzze out of bed i twirl

coffee's on i run into another day
as you run into night
though the sky tumble down
still i overflow with delight

lift a blind
peep out a window
to see the world roll by
sleep deprived and smiling
at the simple sound of a sigh

with just a tickle
mind begins to wiggle
free
spring's singing
birds are springing
do you see what's happening?

is this the party at the end of the universe
or a dawning age
i don't mind i flow with it

throw me down on my pillow
when night closes in
dream in darkness
for a little while
til sun begins to smile again
how i love it when you smile

how high do we go in mind's eye
til love rains down

is the party at the end of the universe
or a dawning age
i don't mind i flow with it
Track Name: Tigerlily
tiger lily and greenleaf tea
can you hear me
in your trenchcoat
gathering butterfly wings
green and gold dust down your lips
hear the wind laughing
pocketful of brushes
painted birds
broken hearts
doctor can you heal me

lay you down in warm sand
melt you open
til your river meet the sea
blow dandelion skeleton to the sun
set them free

i overheard someone say
careful what you throw away
i can't hold on
don't wanna let go
but only a child
thinks dreaming makes it so

lay me down in warm sand
melt me open
til my river meet the sea
blow dandelion skeleton to the sun
set them free

is love real
gesture make it seem that way
but at ten thousand mile
whisper turn to echo
ripple fade

for now
hold me in your arms
like tomorrow may never come
then build a bonfire
to keep warm
til love sails round again
