about

'Rising' was the first studio recording I ever did, at the studio of Chris Daddio, back in 1996. Chris had a wonderfully funky recording studio in Hunters Point Naval Shipyard in San Francisco. We spent several long lovely days there, and there was usually no one in sight, anywhere, beyond the guards at the gate to the shipyard. It was a bit like wandering around a top-secret playground of old abandoned school buildings in some kind of strange post-apocalyptic radioactive dreamspace. I absolutely loved it. Chris was the perfect ambassador to the world of studio recording - he is one of those incredibly warm, generous, hilarious geniuses who makes you feel right at home and like you've been friends forever even though you met five minutes ago. He's one of my favorite people on the planet, and recording this song with him was pretty much the thing that got me to move myself to the Bay area and live a musical life for good.

So, this isn't the most epic song I ever wrote, other than being epically long, as most early songs were (I think an entire verse actually got cut out of this version - you're welcome). But it's one of the first songs I ever wrote on a guitar, and the first song I ever recorded in a studio. It's also the only remaining audio evidence of my alto flute, which got stolen - twice. The first time, I got it back via the lovely Eugene, Oregon police. In San Francisco, I wasn't so lucky. Really hope to replace it one day. The tone is so rich and lovely.

Thanks for taking the time to peer into the past, hope you enjoy - with gentle ears, please (or not - feel free to toss rotten tomatoes if you're truly offended - I promise to have a good laugh along with ya). We all gotta start somewhere.

lyrics

I am made of water and wind
earth and fire gave me form
i give my body to the night
bless the morning with my song
walk with me as i find my footsteps
walk with me as i speak my name
dreaming deep
secrets whispered
and we will begin again

surrendering to freedom
dancing in the coming dawn
bathing fear in passion's flame
emerging from the ashes as one

if i could breathe you with my eyes
i would take you into me
embrace you in my loving arms
as you stand before me
spinning in this dreamland
floating on this ocean
just a touch between our hands
and we are one

what is the thread
between earth and sky
connecting body and soul
in this dance of ecstasy
we are created whole
but we keep running
and we are running out of time
and life keeps slipping by
i want to make it mine

surrendering to freedom
dancing in the coming dawn
bathing fear in passion's flame
emerging from the ashes as one

and if i could go back again
would my life be different
or was this part of the plan
right from the start
all i know is what i feel
and it's always changing
but i am making it real
and i am healing

about

Artemis San Francisco

Spectral keyboard washes and sinuous dance beats set up a feeling of warm alienation while Artemis’s voice heats things further. Over the thump and shimmer, she croons with detached fervor, the music dissolving in a storm of pixie-dust disco until a rude riot of effects snaps the tether and she vanishes. ... more
