I wrote this song during Song-A-Day 2012, inspired by Steve Lawson's live blogging from a conference on environmental issues, the focus of which was empowering individuals to make a positive impact on seemingly overhwelmingly massive, global issues, by taking small steps individually and in community at a local level.
We live in such strange, chaotic times, and also incredibly rich times of connection, communication...as the Chinese glyph is drawn, crisis = danger + opportunity. So much damage has been and continues to be done through our fear, greed and ignorance, and yet the force of life is strong. It finds the tiniest crack, the remotest possibility to emerge from the rubble to renew and begin again. The thread of this song is drawn from that hope...it's a delicate, organic, tiny heartbeat, a spark of light and life breathing itself into something green peering up from a crack in the sidewalk, from the decay of our industry, our wars and brutality.
I invited guitarist and noise artist Lucio Menegon to create a sonic backdrop to the song, representing those decaying industrial dinosaurs. Everything that's not my voice, or a piano, or a little clicky beat is Lucio's soundscape.
We can keep our eyes closed and dig our heels in, resist the change that's needed and knocking on our doors ever more loudly, or we can adapt and learn to harmonize with each other and our world through our thoughts, intentions and actions. We can help that little green thread find its way through into the next chapters of life on this planet.
So this is a love song for the earth that sustains us. And for the hope of us humans learning to love and get along better with each other, and with her. For our little ones' sakes, and the sake of everything that lives, I think we owe it our best effort.
